Tommy Thompson Park

Don Valley Parkway south -
LakeShore Boulevard, east -
Leslie Street south

Located on the Toronto waterfront, Tommy Thompson Park is a unique urban wilderness that offers many public recreational opportunities in the heart of the city.

The park is located on a man-made peninsula that extends five kilometres into Lake Ontario. The Toronto Harbour Commissioners began construction of the spit in the late 1950s and, since that time, it has been the site for the disposal of dredged material from the Outer Harbour and surplus fill from development sites within Toronto.

Toronto and Region Conservation (TRCA) currently owns the land and water bodies included in Tommy Thompson Park. Those areas still under construction are owned by the Ministry of Natural Resources and are leased to the Toronto Harbour Commission. TRCA is responsible for the development and implementation of the "master plan" and the annual operating program, which includes both biological and public interest activities.

One of the most significant features of Tommy Thompson Park is the colonization and succession of various plant communities. These wetlands, meadows and forests now support many threatened and unusual species.

The park has become well known as a significant nesting and staging area for a wide range of birds and other wildlife. In total, more than 290 bird species have been observed on site. Of these, 45 are known to breed here, including ring-billed gulls, herring gulls, common terns, black-crowned night herons and double-crested cormorants.

Interpretive programs are offered on weekends and holidays during the summer months. Nature walks focus on topics from development history to ecological succession, bird life, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, butterflies, fish and botany.

Transportation is provided free of charge to park visitors from early May until mid-October. TRCA operates a shuttle van between the main gate and the pedestrian bridge within the park. Visitors wishing to use this service may board the van at the main gate, pedestrian bridge or anywhere along the route.

Why is there a no pets policy at Tommy Thompson Park ?

Tommy Thompson Park is a unique wildlife area that is home to a large variety of birds, mammals, reptiles and amphibians. Pets can have a negative impact on the wildlife of the Park. Ground nesting birds can have their eggs destroyed by dogs or the female can be scared off the nest never to return. Small mammals such as woodchucks and rabbits are also often chased by dogs. While there has never been a problem with the Park's coyotes, coyotes can be attracted to dogs, even those walked on a leash. To prevent any possible problems with the coyotes it is best that dogs remain outside of the Park. Even the best behaved dogs can be a disturbance to wildlife.

Interactions with wildlife are not the only concern at the Park. Tommy Thompson Park is heavily used as a recreational area and dogs have caused cycle collisions and tripped up people.

The park is open to the public year-round on weekends and holidays, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. Operating hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. (April to October) and 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (November to March). Admission and parking are free. For more information and scheduling of interpretive programs, check the information board at the park entrance or call (416) 661-6600.

The 40th Elmvale Maple Syrup Festival
Elmvale

Emira

Every year the sleepy town of Elmvale explodes in a celebration of Nature's rites of Spring - the running of liquid gold - Ontario Pure Maple Syrup.
The town transforms into a shoppers' mall. Vendors line the streets with offerings of maple syrup, food galore, book sales, collectible sales among other country treasures. Don't miss the Sugar Shack at the east end of town where you can get information, directions, tickets for the bus to the sugar bush tours as well as your copy of the Festival Directory.
Lots of great maple syrup recipes here!! As you approach the Community Hall, you'll smell the delicious aroma of pancakes and sausages- our all day pancake breakfast, a must for all visitors.
As you chow down on this delicious fare, enjoy the sweet sounds of North of 50.
At the east end of Queen St West you'll discover an entertainment stage; on the East Stage you'll meet the Dignitaries, laugh at their log sawing contest and the firemen's pancake eating contest.
You'll enjoy the music of our elementary marching band, the beat of our high school jazz group, the musical stylings of Mr. Dave Pooley and country rhythms of Northern Comfort. All this and dancing too. Mr. Dan Clement is your MC for the day at the East Stage.
See the complete line up for the East Stage in the Festival Directory.
Outside at the arena, kids can pet the animals and go for a pony ride.
The whole family can visit the army reservists display and then have great rides on the midway.
Inside the arena treasures abound at the Craft and Quilt shows.
Come on out to the charming village of Elmvale and experience our wonderful shops, boutiques and eateries and especially the Maple Syrup Festival.

Maple Syrup Time

Spring arrives with trees still bare,
The farmers work with special care
To tap the sweet natural fare,
It's maple syrup time.

The days are warm, the nights are cool,
The snow melts into puddles and pools,
The farmers prepare their tapping tools,
It's maple syrup time.

The Native People's long ago
Discovered the sap that dripped and flowed,
They cooked it down--the process was slow,
In maple syrup time.

Tradition calls for buckets and spiles
And lots of wood split into piles,
Lots of work but lots of smiles,
In maple syrup time.

The pipeline is a current way
To bring in the sap that drips each day,
Gravity helps sap make its way,
In maple syrup time.

With forty parts of sap to start
The boiling is a major part,
The steam boils off leaving one small part,
It's maple syrup time.

With planning, work and boiling done
The tastiest part has just begun.
There's lots of maple recipe fun,
From maple syrup time.

The next time that you taste this treat
Think of the amazing feat.
Sap from trees into syrup to eat!
It's maple syrup time.

.Rockhound Gemboree - Aug 3 '06. 2006-02-18
.43rd Annual Rockhound Gemboree 4th Annual Mineral Capital Stone Carver's Show & Symposium August 3rd to August 6th, 2006 Head to the “Mineral Capital of Canada” August 3rd to August 6th for the Rockhound Gemboree. Canada's largest gem & mineral show brings together over 110 dealers of fine mineral specimens, gemstone jewellery, and lapidary supplies. Highlights of the show include gold panning booth, rock and mineral talks with geologists from Natural Resources Canada, a swapping area, a mineral display and expert mineral identification services offered by Malcolm Back of the Royal Ontario Museum, and geologist-led mineral collecting field trips. Also running in conjunction with the Rockhound Gemboree is the Mineral Capital Stone Carver's Show & Symposium. This show reaches out to sculpture exhibitors, suppliers of stone and equipment, plus artists of all levels of experience. There will be booths for artists to display and sell their work, outdoor sites to carve before the public, plus workshops for artists to learn about techniques and style development. There will also be an opportunity to talk to the artists about starting to carve yourself. Join Rocky the Rockhound, rockhounds from all over North America and beyond, and those that are simply curious, at the Rockhound Gemboree. Bancroft Bancroft is nestled in the York River Valley on the southern edge of the Canadian Shield. The region is known around the world for its variety and quality of mineral specimens. Local specimens grace displays far and wide, including many national museums. The rock beneath Bancroft is between 1.0 and 1.2 billion years old, and has been subjected to volcanic activity, glacial scouting, extreme heat and pressure, and intense faulting and folding. The result of all this is a rich and varied array of semi-precious minerals which provide a paradise for rockhounds. They travel from all over the globe to examine the amazing geology and to collect unique specimens. Field Trips Nothing equals the excitement of finding your own mineral treasures. Geologist-led mineral collecting field trips are conducted daily during the Gemboree: Thursday to Sunday - 9:30 a.m. plus afternoon trips on Friday & Saturday - 1:30 p.m. Registration for the trips is at the North Hastings Senior Elementary School beside the arena. Field trips visit open pits, exploratory trenches and cuts associated with past mining and prospecting activities, and usually last three hours. Participants require their own vehicles. If you are unable to make it to Bancroft during the Gemboree, check with the Chamber of Commerce office for additional field trips offered every Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday during the summer. These trips are conducted by Chamber staff who are available to identify the minerals found and provide information on the geology of the area. You can collect on your own with the Bancroft & District Mineral Collecting Guidebook available at the Chamber office. It lists 30 collecting sites and includes maps. Be sure to visit the Bancroft Mineral Museum located in "The Old Station". http://www.rockhoundgemboree.com/
