Before Death - (The Korean War, 6.25, 1950)- page 8

Before Death
(The Korean War, 6.25, 1950)- page 8

Mother gave me a little spoon with water on my dry lip
She called me name
Dae Tong, Ah, wake up
I heard it a long way off.

My eyes opened,
And my tongue without almost any movement began to fell the
breath in me.

Slowly I was got better
From that unknown sickness

Later
Mother told me about what happened and how I came back alive
I remember she told me a story
It was a legendary tale

Since I lost consciousness,
The village was wrought with tension:

With contagious disease
There were so many people dying
A red ribbon hung down front of our court
Warning of danger

The soul’s journey in space,
Ahaaa Ahaaa, a comforting time
I escaped from the desolation of war

In that situation I was still alive
Even when I tried very hard to survive the sickness
It did not work, sometimes
Still alive in me, along current

Stay me with whatever comes to me
Without any resistance
Make it a strong resistance for escaping death

When I opened my eyes
All my family were looking at me
And weeping loudly

The war is gone
Do the dried white flowers of the lonely weed
Sway on the hillside?

The rain season brought the heavy clouds
They poured out a pale rain
All the animals, cows, dogs, pigs and chickens
Survived in their bones

My body temperature soared to one hundred and four
I fell into sleep
I voyaged on water stream, a strong current bore me
Calmed without any wind, to a peaceful place never seen before
No pain, no sadness, no feelings of hunger, it seems I was
Walking on the clouds
Lightly
In that stage dream, I had a comfortable journey

A boat slowly moved to somewhere
No cry, no fear, a place just for me
I arrived at a certain harbour.

Before Death
(The Korean War, 6.25, 1950)- page 5

Hundreds and hundreds of bodies burned like dark charcoal
Twisted around each other in fear
All blackened to nothing
Until there was nothing more to burn at Surchun, 1953

War is crime, more than crime
Man kills man, but we only watch
Tinting our hearts with tincture of hatred.

 I don’t know my father’s death
His golden youth was gone as the wind

Beyond, in that spring
Buds blossomed and fell on wet ground
Living songs of them rose up everywhere
The chilly cold wind was altered their nature

A water stream moves slowly down the hills
Crying, “sing a song”
It sees the long and cold war and spring rain
Survived by some
They are coming to home but not my father

Forever waits plaintively
To the song of Cuckoo’s weeping

Before Death
(The Korean War, 6.25, 1950)- page 4

After 3 years of war, my country was totally ruined
Things stood in pain, sorrowing with hunger
Why cuckoo did you always cry
Trying to bring summer earlier

Rain season was June and July
Mosquitoes transmitted malaria
Typhoid fever and cholera broke out
No doctors, no medicine
Without self-healing, mystical healing
The healing of the self by the self’s desire
Bodies would have been carried away on stretchers
In the heavy rain burdened with their death

O, God! Where are you? Are you listening to my people’s cry?
No answer is only the answer of just waiting to die

The Communists were scheduled to kill us all
Planned to burn our bodies
In a gasoline fire our rice mill house
My homeland until 1953, just killed, and killed
Bodies filled the wells
Scattered on the hillside with their tissues stripped
So many white bones and skeletons

Before Death-죽음 앞에서

Before Death
(The Korean War, 6.25, 1950)

During winter
Completely out of food, and nothing to eat
Seven of us with our mother
She poured tears all the time as she looked at her children
She made gruel as much as she could
Leaving us just enough energy to stay alive
It only sat in the stomach for a minute

Sometime we had it for meals  -- rice shell’s powder
But we all shared love and bore patiently the cold
That shuddered in our flesh

The long winter gone with our agony
Spring buds began to sprout with confidence
But for them we were beyond spring

Gone was the wind, never seen after him (father)
I try to see him now
Moving through in the universe as clouds
Become other clouds in space and time

Now days,
When raindrops make a sound,
When ducks fly over the horizon

It makes me remember my father.

Before Death-죽음 앞에서

Before Death
(The Korean War, 6.25, 1950)- page 2

After that
Day and night
Their red eyes watched our every movement
We all were poisoned by their armed eyes

When they silence our words
We will vanish without trace
Our hope submerged in the sea
The only thing left is how to die

I lay down on side of the mountain
Listened to the blowing wind on the chilly autumn
Watched a flight of ducks talking as they flew

Unknown
Our ancestor’s tombs on the side of mountain
I was not scared through the black darkness
My tears were wetting the tombs
A prisoner of war, all my family with nothing to eat
We filled our stomach with grown bacteria from the well
But it didn’t kill us.

My father had gone as the wind
Bearing a heavy burden on The Cross
His death was for all his family.

At the last moment,
With handcuffing by a communist’s rope
Through a path by a dirt wall
He glanced at us
We could not say “goodbye”
As he disappeared from our eyes, even so, we should not cry
Our hearts stumbled
When night fell, digesting my hopeless sorrow
On the tombs of my ancestors
My eyes were a frozen in deadly awe

“No, I’ll not take the half…”-(Yevgeny Yevtushenko)

“No, I’ll not take the half…”
(Yevgeny Yevtushenko)

No, I‘ll not take the half of anything!
Give me the whole sky! The far-flung earth!
Seas and rivers and mountain avalanches -
All these are mine! I’ll accept no less!

No, life, you cannot woo me with apart.
Let it be all or nothing! I can shoulder that!
I don’t want happiness by halves,
Nor is half of sorrow what I want.

Yet there’s a pillow I would share,
Where gently pressed against a cheek,
Like a helpless star, falling star,
A ring glimmers on a finger of your hand.
